Storytelling in the digital era

M1 Interactive describes themselves as “a collective of designers, programmers, thinkers, and makers with a passion for engaging digital storytelling…” – We could not sum up their expertise more concisely ourselves. Based in Chicago, Il, M1 Interactive has made a name for themselves, winning contracts with major brands, designing and executing some of the most imaginative and engaging interactive experiences we have ever seen.

MultiTaction is excited that M1 has partnered with us on many projects over the past four years. MultiTaction’s touch display technology is perfectly suited for the type of projects M1 builds. Our camera-based touch technology allows for the best table and videowall touch experiences, with none of the limitations that IR frames introduce especially in table or large wall environments. Combined with our built-in object recognition (Codice Markers), our displays give M1 a larger technology pallet to play with when designing an experience than they would have with any run of the mill touch screen.

The T-Mobile Tech Truck

One project that M1 Interactive and MultiTaction partnered on was the T-Mobile Tech Truck, a mobile incarnation of the T-Mobile Tech Experience which lives in T-Mobile’s Bellevue, WA headquarters. This magenta and black Peterbilt truck turned heads everywhere it rolled and mounted in the back was a 3×3 MultiTaction touch wall and two touch tables.

The challenge of a mobile installation such as this, is that it introduces many new variables that need to be considered in the design.  The truck had to be outfitted to operate in all temperatures, displays had to be mounted to a structure that could compensate for vibrations and life on the road.  All computer equipment had to be redundant, and power systems had to be fortified as well, to account for varying quality of shore and generator power during operation.

Since the truck was constantly moving from one high-profile and expensive event to the next it was vital to hit deadlines and to manage the integration expertly.  We feel truly fortunate to have had M1 as our partner integrating this project. They took on the challenges and made the project a success.

Capital One

Another project M1 Interactive and MultiTaction teamed up for was the Capital One Banking Re-Imagined Road Show. This mobile experience featured ten MultiTaction screens and the experience was designed to lead participants through a personalized journey while helping them learn more about their relationship with their own money. The experience also leveraged Halolens technology for augmented reality integration in the space.

As with the T-Mobile truck, a mobile interactive experience takes a lot of planning, and precise execution.  This is one aspect of M1 Interactive that impresses most.  Not only are they excellent designers of digital experiences, with the ability to build all kinds of content and hardware solutions, but they also are excellent system integrators that know how to keenly manage deployments.

Bixbee & KEHOE DESIGNS

The project featured in the main photo of this blog post is the Imagination Station Interactive Table that M1 Interactive completed for Bixbee, the well-known children’s backpack designer, and the event designer Kehoe Designs.  M1 was brought in to leverage their technical expertise building such interactive environments, and they integrated MultiTaction displays utilizing our object recognition capability with Codice Markers.

Codice Markers and MultiTaction displays allowed M1 Interactive to design an experience where content could be triggered by objects, not merely by finger touch alone.  By placing an object tagged with a Codice Marker on the interactive table content could be triggered relating to that physical object. Codice allows ordinary objects to be digitally activated and the technology is a natural fit for a project such as this.

Storytellers

At their core, M1 Interactive is devoted to telling stories through technology.  Understanding their clients’ brand strategy, or in many cases, developing that brand strategy is what drives the stories they tell.

As they put it “Our culture and the relationships we build with our clients grow and evolve as we explore new solutions and creative methods of communication through digital media.”

MultiTaction is excited to be one of M1 Interactive’s preferred platforms for getting their stories out to the world. Together we hope to activate more spaces and use our tools to drive messages people care about.

UCSD School of MEDICINE

MultiTaction has had the pleasure of working with our AV partner Fluid Sound in San Diego, California on several projects in the region. Most recently Fluid Sound and MultiTaction teamed up to work with the University of California’s San Diego School of Medicine to build “The Wall of Knowledge” featured in the Hybrid Operating Room within their Center for the Future of Surgery (CFS).  It is surely one of the most exciting projects we have been a part of!

The CENTER FOR THE FUTURE OF SURGERY

CFS is a world class facility which is dedicated to advancing surgical techniques. The center, which opened in 2011, has trained over 25,000 surgeons, nurses, medical students, and industry partners int their high-tech simulated operating rooms. In 2019/2020 CFS went through an incredible expansion to become what they believe is the most comprehensive surgical training location in the country. More than 2,000 square feet of new training space has been added to the 20,000 square-foot facility, including the largest microsurgery suite in the United States and the first Hybrid Operating Room designed and dedicated for teaching and training on the West Coast.

The Hybrid OR features a Siemens Artis Zeego system for interventional, 360-degree imaging capabilities, an integrated Trumpf operating table, Stryker integration and communications equipment, a Caresyntax intelligence platform, and a . While MultiTaction was just a part of Fluid Sound’s overall project with the CFS expansion, it was an exciting project see come together.

Since the truck was constantly moving from one high-profile and expensive event to the next it was vital to hit deadlines and to manage the integration expertly.  We feel truly fortunate to have had M1 as our partner integrating this project. They took on the challenges and made the project a success.

DRIVEN BY A VISION

CFS’s lead visionary for the Hybrid Operating Room was Dr. Santiago Horgan, UCSD Professor of Clinical Surgery, and an internationally recognized expert in robot-assisted surgery and other minimally invasive surgical techniques. Dr. Horgan had a specific idea in mind for what he wanted the wall’s purpose to achieve within the room. In the beginning turning the vision into reality, and within budget, was a challenge. Some of the initial discussions even included some value engineered options, which did include building the wall’s nine-screen video wall from a different display manufacturer with an IR touch solution. Fluid, however, knew the best solution to achieve Dr Horgan’s vision could be best achieved through MultiTaction’s technology. In working closely with their MultiTaction account manager, Danny Santiago, the team was able to close the deal.

“There was a question early on about which display, which video wall was going into the surgery room, and which touch technology was going into the surgery room. Was it going to be IR touch or MultiTaction’s flagship capacitive touch? Obviously, the MultiTaction capacitive touch won.” Dennis Pappenfus, Fluid Sound

It took over six years in planning and a year of development for Dr. Horgan and his team to bring CFS 2.0 into existence, but the results have been well worth the effort.  The CFS Hybrid Operating Room remains, in Dr. Horgan’s words, “…the most advanced in the country and worldwide.”

The right tools reignite remote teams

There is no escaping video calls these days. According to CNBCZoom (the popular video conferencing service) saw its daily user rate go from 10 million users in December 2019 to a staggering 200 million users by March 2020, and the number continues to climb as companies extend their remote workplace mandates. Even before the pandemic impact, a report published by FlexJobs and Global Workplace Analytics revealed a large increase in the amount of people working remotely in the U.S. In the span of just one year, from 2016 to 2017, remote work grew 7.9%. Over the last five years it grew 44% and over the previous 10 years it grew 91%.  All of the major video conferencing players (Google Meet, MS Teams, GoToMeeting, Jitsi, Zoom etc.) have been quickly growing their user bases, and are now experiencing an even steeper increase in usage.

Video Conferencing is of course a natural fit and serves a vital purpose for communicating both with internal teams as well as with customers.  It allows for a decent simulation of face-to-face interaction and allows for basic sharing of information via slide presentations and screen sharing. But as workdays begin to stack up with back-to-back video calls, it becomes clear that video conferences have limitations. Too many of these calls in a worker’s schedule can lead to a degree of burnout – sometimes referred to as “Zoom Gloom”.

When did video conferencing become collaboration?

While teleconference technology is here to stay, it is not a magical tool that can do everything well. Often it is the only tool available to allow teams get together and attempt to collaborate.  The results can be frustrating since the software is not really designed with true collaboration in mind.  A truly collaborative digital work environment promotes ideation, user participation, and is agile and responsive enough to not slow the meeting down.

Today’s collaboration software provides the power for individuals to interact more naturally and spontaneously. They allow individual participants to interact and brainstorm without being forced into endless round-robin discussions to get anywhere.  All kinds of media and data can be organized, explored, and expanded upon.  Solutions can be shared and further optimized.  In the end, meetings are much more productive than they would be otherwise.

If you are looking for a way to re-ignite your remote teams, MultiTaction can help. The Canvus Collaboration software solution make it possible to take a hands-on approach to content and allow you to go beyond the boundaries of the traditional meeting room. Whether your team members are in the same room, down the hall, in their home office, or around the world, with a Canvus solution they are now able to work on video and data in real time.

KPMG Delivers Supercharged Outcomes with MultiTaction and Urben

KPMG’s Collaboration Centre enables organizations to generate ideas quickly, and create solutions leveraging their innovative U-Collaborate capability. But during typical U-Collaborate events, the “Knowledge Wall” had previously been floor-to-ceiling whiteboards used to display client or topic specific materials, created and drawn by graphic artists.

To increase engagement and interaction with the Knowledge Wall, the Collaboration Centre wanted to modernize it with a more digital solution incorporating rich media.

“We wanted to transform the Knowledge Wall into a digital, interactive screen, so our clients are able to access and interact with key files, videos, images, web links and other information,” said Paul Guy, Sr. Collaboration Technologist for KPMG.

Now the space includes a 5 X 1 MultiTaction multi-touch, interactive video wall, mounted in an ultra-sleek Urben frame. MultiTaction software also makes it super easy for the Collaboration Centre team to change the content on the video wall in a dynamic way and without waiting for help from IT or developers.

“We can change the content much faster and
easier than we could with our old analog methods,
and that has worked quite well for our people.”

Download the Case Study to learn how the MultiTaction video wall and advanced visualization software suite brought the Knowledge Wall to life with the ultimate interactive experience.

How will higher education survive COVID-19? New ways tech is helping retain students

$

Over the last few months, students had to decide whether to go back to colleges transformed by COVID-19, or take a semester off and hope things get back to normal by spring. Despite the monumental efforts by universities to address concerns, it appears not all students were entirely assured as many institutions absorbed a 5% to 10% decline in tuition.

But as difficult as this fall has been for higher education, more worrying is the chance that next semester could be even worse.

For schools that shifted most or all of their courses online, a lot is riding on whether students have a good experience in the current semester underway. This was one of the key takeaways of a survey conducted earlier this year by the higher education strategy firm, Kennedy and Company.

On the positive side, the survey found that overall 90% of college students would be willing to enroll in an all-online class schedule. But for students who reported having a bad experience with online learning in the recent past, this percentage fell to 45%. More than any other factor, the quality of the learning experience is what drives the decision making process.

UCSD
How UCSD leverages interactive visualization

The impression students have over these next few months will likely impact enrollment levels. Not just in the spring, but potentially for several years. Students who take time off, tend to have a higher risk of never coming back to school at all. Institutions will have to work doubly hard to make up for the reduced enrollment this year in order to avoid carrying the weight of that small class for the next four to five more years.

Luckily, the news isn’t all bad. The CARES Act, signed into law in March of 2020, made billions of dollars in funding available for higher education. These funds will help institutions navigate the unprecedented challenges they face in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic.  Covered expenses include investments in IT, audio-visual, and distance learning infrastructure, as well as related staff salaries, outsourced providers, and online program management firms.

The key question institutions are faced with now is where to invest these funds to make the maximum impact today, while also supporting the institution’s overall long-term strategy.

For schools evaluating options to improve remote learning, it’s worth considering investments with dual value both online and in the classroom after COVID-19 is behind us. One such opportunity is to leverage recent advances that enable hands-on interaction for in-class and remote students, with one multi-functional technology.

Even before the pandemic, many institutions like UCSD School of Medicine and University of Nebraska Medical Center were already bringing touch-interactive multimedia into the classroom to improve student engagement levels and learning outcomes. Investments in the classroom like these can now pay dividends during the pandemic since the same technology used for in-person lectures can also provide touch-interactive collaboration for students at home.

Professors now have the freedom to offer a dynamic multimedia presentation for both in-class and remote students, with all the ease of using a chalkboard, and none of the constraints of a slide deck. Students can safely interact with the presentation content while maintaining social distance. With the professor presenting from a video wall, students can interact from their seat in the classroom or from home using a standard laptop or tablet.

Instead of staring at a slide deck or a talking head, remote students get a far more natural and engaging experience. Similar to an in-person class, students see a full view of the professor standing in front of the video wall, physically interacting with the content, annotating, and relating to the material with gestures.

Video wall

Instructors can focus in on particular assets and direct the attention of the in-person and online audience to a larger view of their real-time annotation. Letting the professor lead a remote class in a way more intuitive and familiar to them allows more of their enthusiasm come through, which helps get students inspired about the topic.

The video wall also offers flexibility to adapt on the fly based on input from students. It frees up professors to go off-script or dive deeper on a particular thread and bring up any range of digital assets, websites, or even live software applications for students to interact with.

Laptop

When remote students can fully interact with the content on the wall, they feel more like an active participant in the discussion. The intuitive nature of touch interaction, along with the ability to contribute their own content real-time, gives students a more vivid experience.

This is particularly useful for group project work. Group participants based in multiple locations can literally get on the same page, sharing a touch-interactive digital canvas displaying all of their project materials. Students can all make edits on the canvas simultaneously or log in later to work individually whenever needed. The team’s progress together is continuously saved and the completed project can be presented to the professor directly from the canvas.

New advances like these have opened up a range of exciting possibilities for our higher education system. Even before COVID-19, there was already a need for universities to deliver a more dynamic learning experience capable of inspiring the students of today. Institutions just no longer have the luxury to tackle these challenges slowly over time.

With concerns about enrollment levels for spring semester, the CARES funding presents a tremendous opportunity for schools to stand out in both recruitment and retention. If schools can show they’re invested in evolving traditional teaching methods and tools, it will go a long way toward assuring students about the quality of the learning experience.

Despite a difficult year for higher education, institutions have a rare chance to transform both the online experience for students today and the in-classroom experience far into the future.

MultiTaction is pleased to unveil our new 55” interactive display, Decca (MT557D). For over a decade MultiTaction has developed solutions that revolutionize spaces and bring interactivity and collaboration to teams worldwide. Decca represents the next generation of MultiTaction’s 3D optical display hardware, and incorporates our latest technological advances along with many refinements – making Decca truly a display to be celebrated.

Curved Decca Wall

Decca incorporates the next generation of MultiTaction’s revolutionary ClearSight touch technology (machine vision through screen) engineered for 24/7 commercial environments. This system utilizes an array of 32 embedded cameras which interpret input made by hands, pens and other objects that interact with the screen’s surface.

The technology is unique to MultiTaction interactive displays and gives design freedom to create interactive walls with features like curves and right-angles, which other video wall technologies cannot match. Furthermore, ClearSight touch technology is so responsive, it even rivals the best of today’s highest-end mobile devices.

Decca has 30% more internal processing power than previous models. Power consumption has been further optimized so that even with the added horsepower, Decca uses less electricity. Along with these advances, Decca has whisper-soft fans that keep the system cool and quiet.

Visually stunning graphics and impeccable color uniformity are further enhanced by Decca’s durable, satin smooth surface. Decca is also the first display from MultiTaction to feature an easy-to-clean, antimicrobial touch surface. Product is shipping now and available through traditional MultiTaction channels.

“Decca is the result of 10 years of design improvements bringing forward the most advanced interactive display in the market. Canvus 3.0 redefines touch interactive visual collaboration for today’s needs

They say that touch may be the simplest and most powerful form of human expression. So why should technology get in the way of that? When we first designed Canvus, our goal was to put the full potential of the human imagination right at your fingertips while keeping the interface so simple that even a first-time user could have an inspiring collaboration experience.  Now with Canvus 3.0, we’re excited to be putting even more power into the hands of users while further simplifying interaction.

This major update to Canvus introduces key functionality to enable the often spontaneous nature of collaboration. Now it’s easier than ever to invite hands-on interaction from participants across the hall or across the world and share insights from those meetings across your organization.

During a collaboration session users can now easily email an invite to meeting participants elsewhere in the building, working from home, in a client’s office, or anywhere from any laptop, tablet, or video wall with Canvus installed. With just a touch you can send a link out for others to instantly join your session with remote touch interaction just as if they were in the same room.

Different teams within an organization want to use a video wall for different purposes but their saved content may not always be intended for other teams to view or modify. While any user can still walk up to a video wall and start a Canvus session, Canvus 3.0 gives you control of who can access your individual canvases.

Canvus Connect

Managing access and editing rights for different groups of users across the entire organization is now possible from a single dashboard. In addition, users can authenticate to Canvus 3.0 with SAML through an identity provider (IDp) of your choice so nobody needs to remember a new username or password. To skip entering credentials with a keyboard, Canvus 3.0 also allows authentication using a mobile device by scanning a QR code on the screen.

With updates to nearly every facet of of the platform, there are far more enhancements to explore in Canvus 3.0 than could be described here! Download the full overview of Canvus 3.0 and access the new software update as well as detailed documentation on the full list of improvements at apps.multitaction.com.
